Weaving
the threads of fabric knowledge
The Redcoats are coming, the Redcoats are coming!
- British troops in the Revolutionary war era were know by their red jackets. It was easy for the American patriots to target the officers in any British regiment because they wore coats that were a brighter red than those of the enlisted men. The wool used for officer jackets was dyed with cochineal, while the troops had jackets dyed with madder. Cochineal produced a bright crimson, while the madder dyed fabric was a duller shade of red. Some days it did not pay to be an officer.
